Ray Lewis implies Miami Dolphins lack chemistry: ‘There’s no defined leader’

The Miami Dolphins employ plenty of talented players, but they lost more games than they won during the 2024 campaign, finishing with an 8-9 record.

Baltimore Ravens legend Ray Lewis recently implied that the Dolphins lack chemistry rather than talent with the team on the heels of one of its more disappointing seasons in recent memory.

“Sometimes you gotta go through these rebuilding phases,” Lewis said, speaking on the Dolphins. “I think when you have a lot of rock stars, superstars, I will take more chemistry than I would take rock stars. Give me people I can get to work together, and then it all pans itself out. But they got so many personalities, so many people, and then so many directions that they really don’t know…like, when you think of the Dolphins, what’s the identity? Speed? Okay, great, but that’s a tangible thing, that’s a talent. I think community. What does it mean to be as a team? When we come in there, who’s the leader? There’s no defined leader.”

Lewis got familiar with winning during his NFL career. He won a pair of Super Bowls during his time playing for the Ravens and helped Baltimore make numerous other playoff runs.

In the 2024 NFL season, the Dolphins missed out on the playoffs for the first time since head coach Mike McDaniel took over the reins ahead of the 2022 season. Miami was in the hunt for a playoff spot until Week 18 but ended up on the wrong side of the bubble.

Perhaps wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s comments on his future in Miami after the Dolphins lost to the New York Jets in Week 18 were a solid microcosm of the team lacking chemistry. He heavily implied that he was done with the Dolphins and that the best decision for the sake of his NFL career would be to play elsewhere.

Hill also seemingly pulled himself from Miami’s contest against the Jets. Some, including NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, took exception to that. Sharpe accused the star receiver of quitting on his team. It’s worth noting that Hill ended the game in question with only 20 receiving yards on two receptions.

Despite Hill’s comments after the Week 18 game, there have been no indications that the veteran is actually pursuing a trade, so it seems like he’s on track to return to the team next season.

Regardless of what the Dolphins need to do in order to make it happen, hopefully Miami can solve its chemistry problems before the beginning of the 2025 campaign if those issues do indeed exist. The Dolphins are simply too talented of a football team to be coming up short of the playoffs.
