Report: Miami Dolphins scouting several QBs in 2025 NFL Draft

Soon, football fans will get to see some top NFL prospects face off in the Senior Bowl on Feb. 1. The Senior Bowl is a college football All-Star game of sorts that takes place in the city of Mobile, Ala.

The first two Senior Bowl practices were held on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Miami Dolphins have been connected to numerous quarterbacks who are at the event.

“Jaxson Dart of Mississippi might be the leading candidate at the Senior Bowl to be the Dolphins’ primary backup and the highest draftee,” wrote Chris Perkins of the Sun Sentinel.

“But Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, who both said they’ve talked to the Dolphins this week, Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, and Taylor Elgersma, a collegiate Canadian who has never played American football, are also at the Senior Bowl and will be scouted by the Dolphins.”

The Dolphins were ill-prepared regarding their depth at the quarterback position when usual starter Tua Tagovailoa went down with a concussion early on in the 2024 regular season, and that came back to bite them. Miami lost three of its four games during a stretch from September into October with Tagovailoa sidelined.

Near the end of the campaign, the Dolphins were again without their starting quarterback due to a different injury, once more highlighting the importance of having depth at the position.

Dart was one of the elite quarterbacks in all of college football with the University of Mississippi during the 2024 season. He led his entire conference in completion percentage (69.3) and total passing yards (4,279) across 13 games played in his fourth and final season at the collegiate level. He even led the entire FBS in some other categories, like passer efficiency rating.

However, it’s worth noting that Perkins doesn’t seem all too convinced that the Dolphins will find their No. 2 signal-caller behind Tagovailoa at the Senior Bowl. He alleged that none of the quarterbacks looked all that impressive during the first two practices. Perhaps that’ll change.

It’s also worth noting that not every quarterback prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft is at the Senior Bowl, and the Dolphins could certainly be linked to other players besides those mentioned by Perkins in the months leading up to the draft.

Whether the Dolphins find their designated No. 2 quarterback via the 2025 NFL Draft or not, Miami’s shortcomings from the 2024 campaign indicate that the team must have its depth at the signal-caller position squared away before the 2025 season starts. If they don’t get it squared away, the Dolphins could be in for yet another frustrating campaign.

Quarterback Tyler Huntley, who started five games for the Dolphins this season, is set to hit free agency but could be brought back.
