Report: Byron Jones to be out 2 months after surgery, could be available on the trade market

On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins star defensive back Byron Jones revealed via social media that he had undergone surgery.

Jones himself didn’t reveal exactly what he had undergone surgery for, but NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported on Wednesday that Jones had the surgery to repair a lingering ankle injury.

He is expected to be out for approximately two months, and the former first-round pick is expected to be ready for training camp.

Along with the news of the injury, it was reported that there was trade buzz surrounding Jones at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

“There may be some availability to Byron Jones in the trade market,” Wolfe said. “How does this change that? That’s yet to be seen.”

It is unclear how much the ankle injury hampered Jones last season. In the 2021 NFL season, he played in 16 games and started in all of them. He recorded 58 combined tackles, 10 passes defended and one forced fumble.

Despite a fairly successful season, Jones and the Dolphins failed to accomplish their ultimate goal of ending the playoff drought in South Florida.

For the second straight campaign, the Dolphins were in the playoff hunt until the final few weeks of the regular season, falling just short both times.

With new head coach Mike McDaniel leading the charge now, the Dolphins are surely hoping they’ll be able to end that trend and finally make it into the playoffs during the 2022 campaign. Miami hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2016 season.

Whether or not Jones is still on the team when the regular season begins remains to be seen.
