In late February, it was reported that University of Alabama wide receiver and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith chose his teammate Mac Jones over Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa when asked to choose between the two.
Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who also played with the two quarterbacks at Alabama, also chose Jones over Tagovailoa when asked on Wednesday.
“I like Mac Jones too,” said Waddle. “I like Mac Jones. Just my preference. Both of them are great quarterbacks, but I love Mac. He was the guy I came in with and from day one, we was on the third team together and we worked our way up, so Mac.”
While it is interesting that Waddle chose Jones, it could just mean that Waddle is closer to him off the field.
In three seasons at Alabama, Waddle caught 106 passes for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns. This past season, which was his junior year, he caught 28 passes for 591 yards and four touchdowns. Last season he only appeared in a total of six games due to an ankle injury.
As for Tagovailoa, he threw for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in his rookie season with the Dolphins. In his nine starts, he went 6-3, but was unable to lead the Dolphins to the playoffs.
Waddle is projected to be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to begin on April 29.
