On Tuesday, Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier addressed a number of hot topics surrounding the team, including the future of wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Grier indicated that the Dolphins aren’t looking to move Hill, but he did leave the door open a little bit in case any team around the league wants to make a massive offer to trade for the veteran.
On Wednesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport offered his perspective on Grier’s comments.
“What Chris Grier essentially said is there are no trade talks surrounding Tyreek Hill,” Rapoport said before continuing to summarize Grier’s comments. “No one has reached out. They have not reached out to anyone.
“That amounts to essentially a big nothing. What he did say, though, was if someone wants to offer two first-rounders for Tyreek Hill, of course they would listen.
“Now, the reason he says that is because, first of all, almost no players are untradable. But look at where Tyreek is in his career: 31 years old, due to make $27.6 million. Hard to imagine any team right now trading for that player coming off wrist surgery and that contract.
“I’m sure we’re still gonna talk about it, just seems highly unlikely.”
Hill’s Dolphins tenure has turned into a rocky one, regardless of his on-the-field production.
Whether it be via postgame comments or on social media, the veteran hasn’t shied away from stirring up trade buzz and speculation about his future. He has also been involved in some off-the-field stories that haven’t painted him in a positive light.
The fact that Hill also struggled (by his standards) during the 2024 season doesn’t help matters.
In each of his first two seasons with the Dolphins, he exceeded 1,700 receiving yards. But this past season, he struggled while playing through injury, finishing the campaign with just 959 yards. It was a rough season overall for Miami, as the team went 8-9.
It doesn’t seem like there’s any reason to believe that Hill is going anywhere right now, but his stint with the team is certainly turning into a complicated matter. The Dolphins gave up a lot to acquire him before the 2022 season, and one can only wonder if the organization has any regrets about that.
If Hill and the Dolphins can return to the playoffs in the 2025 campaign and perhaps pick up a postseason victory, the feeling around his tenure may improve, but for now, it would be hard to call his time in Miami a smashing success.
The Dolphins still have some work to do this offseason if they want to position themselves for a strong 2025 campaign, and the 2025 NFL Draft will be a key event as they try to fill some holes. The draft will begin in a little over a week.
