Mike McDaniel gets real on Odell Beckham Jr.’s release from Miami Dolphins

Amid news of the Miami Dolphins and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. agreeing to part ways, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel spoke about the release of the veteran.

Beckham’s stint with the Dolphins wasn’t very memorable. He missed the first four games of the season while on the PUP list, and upon returning, it took him a few games to even register a catch.

In Week 9, he did finally get on the board with three catches for 15 yards, but he was never able to turn things up a notch from there. A couple of similar performances in Weeks 10 and 11 helped him add to his totals on the season, but overall, he was still only able to catch nine passes for 55 yards during his time with the Dolphins. He didn’t score a touchdown.

There’s still time for Beckham to land somewhere else this season, so it will be worth monitoring whether or not he does join a team that’s in need of some receiving help. He could try to latch on with a contender and make a push for a second Super Bowl ring after he won one earlier in his career with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, will have to get by without him, a task that shouldn’t be too daunting considering his production levels this season. The hope was that Miami’s addition of Beckham was going to give the team a scary trio headlined by fellow receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but the plan never fully came together.

There are four games left in the regular season for the Dolphins (6-7), who will likely need to win them all to have a chance at a playoff bid. Miami’s next game will come against the Houston Texans on the road this weekend in what could be the toughest matchup left for the squad.

A win in that game would leave the door open for the Dolphins to finish the regular season with a 10-7 record, which would be their second-best finish of the McDaniel era.
