Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was highly touted by NFL Network analyst David Carr, who compared Tagovailoa to another southpaw signal-caller, Hall of Famer Steve Young.

Carr was asked what to expect in Tagovailoa’s second season and expressed the level of excitement surrounding him and made the comparison to Young.

“He looks like Steve Young,” Carr said. “I mean, that’s the guy that he’s gonna turn into. It’s gonna take a little time. It took Steve Young a while to morph and kind of grow into that All-Pro, MVP type player, but he has the same type of ability as Steve.”

Carr knows all about the high expectations for young quarterbacks, having been the top overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He played five seasons there before spending the final five seasons of his career with three other teams.

Young’s career actually began in the United States Football League before he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After the San Francisco 49ers traded for Young, his action on the field was limited by the presence of another Hall of Famer. However, he eventually led the 49ers to a Super Bowl title and played with the team through the 1999 campaign.

Over the course of Young’s memorable career, he was also known for his running, finishing with 4,239 yards and scoring 43 touchdowns.

Tagovailoa’s passing skills are a work in progress, though he did throw for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine starts as a rookie.

As a runner, Tagovailoa only scampered for 109 yards and three touchdowns, though it’s likely that the Dolphins were leery of putting Tagovailoa in potential danger after coming off major hip surgery.
