The South Florida Police Benevolent Association released a statement regarding the incident involving Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill. The incident happened before Miami’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The statement read that Hill was not cooperative with police, which was why he was placed in handcuffs. Hill was issued two traffic citations and then was allowed to leave. He was never under arrest during the incident.

On Sunday, after the Dolphins picked up a thrilling 20-17 win over Jacksonville, defensive lineman Calais Campbell came to the defense of Hill, saying that excessive force was used during his detainment.
Campbell also shared that he was put in handcuffs for “disobeying a direct order” after getting out of his car to try to de-escalate the situation.
It’s an unfortunate situation all around, and it certainly made things tough on the Dolphins ahead of their Week 1 game. It’ll be interesting to see if Hill, his agent or the Dolphins have a statement to respond to the South Florida Police.
Despite being in handcuffs before kickoff, Hill still found a way to make a massive impact for the Dolphins on the field.
He caught seven passes against the Jaguars for 130 yards, scoring an 80-yard touchdown to cut the Jacksonville lead down to three points at 17-14. Miami ended up kicking two field goals, including one as time expired, to win its first game of the season.

After scoring his touchdown, Hill celebrated by having teammate Jaylen Waddle pretend to put him in handcuffs.

“All across the world, you see it,” Hill said about the incident when asked what would have happened if he wasn’t himself. “I don’t want to bring race into it. But sometimes it’s kind of iffy when you do. What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what those guys would have did. I was making sure I did what my uncle told me to do if you’re ever in situations like that. Put your hands on the steering wheel, just listen.”
The star receiver also showed support for law enforcement despite what happened to him on Sunday.
“I want to be a cop one day,” Hill said. “I got a lot of respect for cops. Obviously, everybody has bad apples in every situation. I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends, on my end and Miami Dade and do something positive for the community. You guys are here to protect us as individuals. I have a platform and want to be able to team up with you guys.”
Hill and the Dolphins will attempt to put the incident from Sunday behind them as they head into a big game against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
Miami lost the AFC East division to Buffalo in the final game of the regular season in the 2023 campaign.
