‘MY GOODNESS’: Dolphins teammates react to Ethan Robinson’s epic play

Miami Dolphins cornerback Ethan Robinson made the play of the game in the team’s preseason bout against the Detroit Lions on Saturday. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter in a one-score game, he picked off a pass thrown by quarterback Hendon Hooker and secured a seven-point victory for Miami.

After the Dolphins celebrated the play with an Instagram post, a couple of players reacted in the comment section. Cornerback Jason Maitre and linebacker Chop Robinson both had notable reactions, with the latter playfully reminding folks that he shares Ethan Robinson’s last name.

Ethan Robinson is a rookie who went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft after he had a strong 2024 season at the University of Minnesota. He accumulated 42 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, a trio of interceptions and eight passes defended across 13 games played with the Golden Gophers in the 2024 season. He also had one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

The neophyte is facing long odds at landing a roster spot with the Dolphins out of the gate, but he may be able to earn a spot on the practice squad, and his game-sealing interception is only going to help his chances. Miami earned its first preseason win on Saturday after its preseason opener against the Chicago Bears ended in a tie.

Ethan Robinson could become an interesting project for Miami, especially given the team’s question marks in the secondary. The Dolphins’ entire starting secondary from a season ago is now gone due to departures and/or injury woes.

Folks will probably have a better idea as to whether Ethan Robinson will have a real puncher’s chance at landing a roster spot or practice squad spot after they see how he performs in the Dolphins’ preseason finale. Miami has an outing against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, and a big game from the rookie would go a long way.

The Dolphins will then kick off their 2025 season with a road game against the Indianapolis Colts in early September.
