Dolphins safety goes after Jameson Williams: ‘Hit me first see what’s going to happen’

On Aug. 13, after the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions wrapped up the first day of joint practices, emotions appeared to have boiled over and a brief scrum occurred. Allegedly, nearly every player from both sides got involved.

It’s worth noting that Detroit allegedly dominated both sides of the ball during the practice. The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy boldly claimed that it was the “most lopsided joint practice” that he had ever witnessed.

It seems as if some trash-talk between former teammates sparked the scrum. Dolphins safety Ifeatu Melifonwu and Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams exchanged words as the teams were leaving the field, and the brief fight broke out.

“He does talk a lot,” Melifonwu said about Williams. “I don’t mind talking, but if you’re going to try and hit me first see what’s going to happen.”

Melifonwu played his first four seasons in the NFL with the Lions organization and was Williams’ teammate on Detroit for the last three seasons.

The 26-year-old Boston native agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Dolphins earlier this offseason, and he could potentially have a sizable role with his new team in the coming campaign with all of the hits Miami’s secondary has taken compared to last season. For one, cornerback Jalen Ramsey is no longer with the team, as he got traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers after he was a pivotal part of the team’s secondary in each of the last two seasons.

Melifonwu will soon face off against Williams and his former team in a preseason contest on Aug. 16, and perhaps some bad blood between the two players will carry over into that contest. The youngster will have a chance to prove to the Dolphins fans watching at home that he can be an effective member of the team’s defensive unit in the 2025 campaign, and he should have a chip on his shoulder in light of his verbal exchange with Williams just days ago.

After the Dolphins take on the Lions, they will wrap up their preseason schedule with a home contest at Hard Rock Stadium versus the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 23. Then, Miami will kick the 2025 season and its 17-game schedule off versus the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7 in what will be a road contest for the Dolphins.
