Mike McDaniel offers positive update after Chop Robinson suffers scary rib injury

Miami Dolphins linebacker Chop Robinson suffered a rib injury in the team’s joint practice with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, and he ended up getting carted off the field. Allegedly, Robinson suffered the injury during team drills and was on the ground for quite a bit before he was eventually carted off.

Robinson injured himself while forcing a fumble from Lions running back David Montgomery. Robinson ended up making it clear with a post on Instagram that he doesn’t have a serious injury, however, and an update on Thursday seemingly gives credence to that notion.

According to Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Robinson returned to practice on Thursday not long after enduring his rib injury.

When Miami used the No. 21 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Robinson, he marked the Dolphins’ highest pick in some time. The last time the team drafted in the opening round prior to selecting Robinson was when it drafted wide receiver Jaylen Waddle with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Robinson went on to have quite the rookie campaign in the 2024 season and was as productive as any of Miami’s first-year players. Not only was he one of only two picks from the 2024 NFL Draft to play in every one of the Dolphins’ 17 games last season, but he ended up with the second-most sacks of any player on the team with six.

The 22-year-old projects to once again be an important member of Miami’s defensive unit in the 2025 season, and maybe more starts will be in the cards for him as a sophomore compared to when he was a rookie. While he was a consistent presence on the field as a neophyte, he did start only one game for the Dolphins.

Hopefully, Robinson’s rib injury won’t be the start of an injury-plagued season for him in the coming season and he will have great availability in the 2025 campaign as well. Miami might not be able to afford for him to deal with injury woes if it wants to stay competent on the defensive side of the ball with all the talent it has lost in its secondary.
