Asante Samuel: ‘Mike McDaniel is a pushover; Chris Grier…he has no backbone’

With cornerback Jalen Ramsey now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s evident that the Miami Dolphins could have a lot to gain from bolstering their secondary. One of the free agents available on the market who could help soften the blow of the loss of Ramsey is cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have shown interest in the 25-year-old, who is still in the process of rehabbing from a neck injury. According to recent words from Samuel’s father Asante Sr., however, Dolphins fans shouldn’t hold their breath for the younger Samuel to ink a deal with Miami soon.

The elder Samuel torched the leadership of the Dolphins’ organization and even name-dropped folks such as head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier when discussing the team’s perceived leadership issues.

The younger Samuel was limited to just four games played with the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2024 campaign thanks to what he referred to as a stinger in both of his shoulders. The youngster also said he’s been dealing with such a condition since birth.

However, the younger Samuel proved through his play in the 2023 season that he’s a highly effective and talented player at the cornerback position. He started 16 of the 17 games he appeared in with the Chargers that campaign and totaled two interceptions, 63 combined tackles, 56 solo tackles, seven assisted tackles and one tackle for loss.

There’s a chance the Dolphins could be out of the running to acquire the younger Samuel in light of comments that the elder Samuel made about some top figureheads in the organization. Namely, it’s unfortunate because the younger Samuel is one of the more talented corners left on the open market, and he could be the solution to the team’s cornerback quagmire both now and in the future.

If the younger Samuel has definitively ruled out the Dolphins as a landing spot already, hopefully they will add a talented cornerback to the fold one way or another prior to the beginning of the 2025 campaign.
