Some people have wondered whether the quagmire that the Miami Dolphins are in with star cornerback Jalen Ramsey has to do with money, a common breaking point for a player and team.
But according to one rival NFL scout, the Ramsey situation is a result of a “broken” relationship between him and Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. The scout was unable to relay exactly “what happened,” though, indicating that there’s some mystery involved in the situation.
“The broken relationship between Jalen Ramsey and McDaniel is why he’s on the trade block,” the anonymous scout told Athlon Sports.
“No one has been able to explain what happened, but I was told this actually has nothing to do with money. It’s a vote of no confidence in McDaniel. If the Ramsey trade goes down, this is a huge talent drain in the secondary.”
McDaniel declined to touch on his relationship with Ramsey when the topic was brought up earlier this offseason, but Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said that “relationships are hard” when speaking on Ramsey last month.
It’s been an open secret for a while now that the Dolphins are trying to move Ramsey in a trade after he played the 2023 and 2024 campaigns in a Miami uniform.
But even with that being the case, Ramsey remains a member of the Dolphins organization with the start of July only several days away.
Maybe opinions that the Dolphins should instead hold onto Ramsey will grow louder the longer that the awkward situation in Miami unfolds. The Dolphins likely have very little leverage in trade talks regarding Ramsey considering their desire to part ways with him is well-documented, so maybe they should just keep him in the fold for 2025.
Ramsey has shown some signs of possible decline and will be 31 years old in October, but he’s still one of the biggest stars that the Dolphins, who need cornerback help, have. He totaled 60 combined tackles, a pair of interceptions, 11 passes defended, six tackles for loss and four quarterback hits with Miami across 17 games (all starts) in the 2024 season.
If the Dolphins do have Ramsey still on the roster for the 2025 season, it might be difficult to envision him coexisting with McDaniel amid all of the rumors about their relationship, but it’s still an option Miami should mull over.
