Mike McDaniel reveals ‘direct’ conversation he had with Tyreek Hill

Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill made waves on Sunday after the team’s loss to the New York Jets, as he seemingly implied that he no longer wants to be a part of the franchise.

Hill then followed up that move by paying homage to Antonio Brown on social media, changing his profile picture to his face on Brown’s body when the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver left a game early against the Jets. Brown has not played in the NFL since.

However, it appears that Hill had some productive meetings with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier. He has even restored his profile picture on X (formerly known as Twitter) to an image of himself in a Dolphins uniform.

Grier revealed that while Hill did not walk back his comments from Sunday, he did not ask the Dolphins for a trade.

That’s a positive sign that the Dolphins and Hill can keep the relationship together after the star wideout spent the last three seasons in a Miami uniform.

Grier declined to share details of his conversation with Hill, stating that the receiver was “emotional” after a tough season.

“Mike and I had conversations with Tyreek, productive conversations,” Grier said. “I will keep those between us. In a frustrating season, he was very emotional.”

This season, Hill dealt with a wrist injury that may have hampered his play. Hill took a massive step back statistically in the 2024 campaign after back-to-back seasons where he finished with over 1,700 receiving yards.

The star receiver caught just 81 passes for 959 yards and six touchdowns, averaging just 56.4 receiving yards per game – his lowest average since his rookie season. The fact that starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed six games also played a role in Hill’s downturn in production this season.

In the Dolphins’ final game of the season, Hill removed himself from the game, something that McDaniel said was unacceptable behavior.

“I was very direct with him,” McDaniel said of his conversation with Hill. “He was very honest. Discussed multiple things including it’s not acceptable to leave a game and won’t be tolerated. He embraced accountability.”

Despite Hill’s recent actions, McDaniel still shared that the eight-time Pro Bowler would be the No. 1 option in the offense next season as long as teams aren’t doubling him.

Hopefully, the Dolphins will be able to work things out with Hill and keep him in Miami, but it’s possible things could change as the offseason goes on.
