Report: Dolphins place Grant DuBose on IR and sign 2 players to practice squad

The Miami Dolphins reportedly made multiple roster moves on Tuesday ahead of their Week 16 game with the San Francisco 49ers.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dolphins placed injured receiver Grant DuBose on injured reserve and signed receiver Isaiah McKenzie, as well as quarterback Skylar Thompson, to their practice squad.

DuBose was injured in the Dolphins Week 15 loss to the Houston Texans and ended up spending the night in the hospital for evaluation.

The Dolphins provided a positive update on DuBose on Monday, but he appears to be out for the season since he’s required to miss four games on injured reserve and the Dolphins only have three regular-season games remaining.

This season, DuBose has appeared in three games for the Dolphins, catching two passes (on four targets) for 11 yards. All in all, he has played in 50 offensive snaps (23 percent) in his three games for Miami.

It’s possible that McKenzie – a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft – could get an opportunity to help out a depleted Dolphins receiving corps. McKenzie last played in the NFL in the 2023 season with the Indianapolis Colts, catching 11 passes for 82 yards across 13 games (two starts).

For his career, McKenzie has 152 receptions for 1,427 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. He’s played with the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills and Colts. His best season in the NFL was likely during the 2022 campaign when he caught a career-high 42 passes for 423 yards and four touchdowns.

As for Thompson, he actually started a game for the Dolphins this season while Tua Tagovailoa was on injured reserve with a concussion. It’s possible that the Dolphins are simply signing Thompson for insurance as the season nears a close.

Miami is currently under .500 at 6-8 and outside of the top-seven seeds in the AFC, meaning that if the season ended today it would not make the playoffs. The Dolphins still have a seven percent chance to make the playoffs in the 2024 campaign, according to NFL.com.

Miami closes out the regular season with games against the 49ers, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets.
