Tyreek’s new comments may spark confusion on whether police detainment really did impact wrist injury

Not long before the Miami Dolphins played the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10, Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was a game-time decision with a wrist injury.

What’s known now is that he suffered the injury in a preseason practice with the Washington Commanders, but it’s unclear as to whether his viral interaction with police shortly before Miami’s season opener in Week 1 reaggravated his injury.

On Thursday, he was asked about that possibility.

“I wouldn’t say that,” he replied when asked if being handcuffed by police made the injury worse.

However, ESPN’s Lisa Salters shared prior to the Dolphins’ matchup against the Rams that he reaggravated his wrist injury during the detainment.

“He said it’s something that he’s really being dealing with all season long,” Salters said. “He said it first started in training camp, but then he said it got re-aggravated when he was arrested right before the opening game of the season. He was taken to the ground by police…and he said that’s where the further damage was done.”

The 30-year-old was detained on the day that the Dolphins took on the Jacksonville Jaguars to kick off their 2024 regular season on Sept. 8. Thanks to the fact that the Dolphins organization intervened in the situation, neither Hill — nor defensive end Calais Campbell, who was also detained — were arrested after police planned to arrest them both.

The incident sparked a wide variety of reactions, with many feeling that police mishandled the situation and Hill ultimately calling for police reform.

Hill’s detainment became a trending topic on social media once again not all that long ago after a picture of kids imitating his detainment as part of a Halloween stunt went viral on X. The star receiver even responded to the picture in question and seemed to get a kick out of it.

Hill hasn’t missed a game this season for the Dolphins, but he hasn’t always looked like himself from a production standpoint. He’s hoping to change that. Across nine games, he has 37 catches for 462 yards and two scores.

When the Dolphins snapped their losing streak with a win over the Rams a few days back, Hill wasn’t a huge factor in Miami’s third win of the campaign. He totaled just 16 receiving yards — his second-lowest mark in a single game this campaign — on three receptions. He did, however, score his second touchdown of the season.
