Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was a game-time decision for the team’s Monday night matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, but he ended up playing in the contest.
After he totaled 70-plus receiving yards in each of Miami’s two contests prior to Monday’s bout, Hill wasn’t much of a factor against Los Angeles. He finished with just 16 receiving yards — his second-lowest total in a single game this season — and three receptions. If receiver Jaylen Waddle and tight end Jonnu Smith hadn’t picked up the slack and combined for 102 receiving yards, perhaps the Dolphins wouldn’t have won the contest by a final score of 23-15 to improve to 3-6 on the season.
Following the Dolphins’ third win of the campaign, Hill broke the silence on his wrist injury and admitted that he’s been dealing with it for quite some time.
“I landed on it in the [Washington] Commanders practice… been dealing with it the whole season,” Hill said. “Football is a physical sport.”
It was reported by ESPN that Hill’s wrist injury was also aggravated when he was handcuffed by police prior to Miami’s season opener.
Hill said that “there was never a doubt” he was going to suit up against the Rams. Also, head coach Mike McDaniel had high praise for the 31-year-old, saying he’s a “warrior, as good as it gets in this league. Tyreek wills himself to do things most competitors can’t match.”
Perhaps the fact that Hill injured his wrist before the season even began partly explains why he has looked like a shell of the player he was in his first two seasons as a member of the Dolphins. Just one season ago, Hill was the NFL’s most productive receiver by several metrics.
He finished tops in the league in total receiving yards (1,799), receiving yards per game (112.4) and receiving touchdowns (13). But fast forward to the this season, and Hill has just 462 receiving yards to his name with more than half of the Dolphins’ regular-season schedule in the books. He also doesn’t even rank in the top 25 among players in the league in total receiving yards so far in his third season with Miami.
Even though Hill hasn’t exactly starred for the Dolphins on all too many occasions to this point of the season, he still deserves the utmost respect and admiration from fans of the team for playing through injury. Plus, maybe he’ll bounce back from his quiet showing against Los Angeles when the Dolphins take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 17.
