Anthony Weaver speaks out on Tyreek incident, implies he was ‘relieved’ when his kids were born ‘light-skinned’

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver spoke publicly about the incident in which wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police prior to the team’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He implied that he’s happy that his kids were born “light-skinned” so that they do not have to deal with racial profiling.

“Weaver said that his wife is of Mexican descent and when his children were born light-skinned, he almost had a ‘sense of relief’ because they would not have to experience some of the things he has, alluding to profiling,” Joe Schad wrote.

Footage of Hill’s arrest was made available to the public before the Dolphins even took the field on Sept. 8.

Weaver said that the video was “triggering” and also spoke on the players that got involved in addition to law enforcement in general.

“I know who these people are as men,” Weaver said of players involved. “It’s unfortunate. I know there are a lot of good people in law enforcement. We have to look at these on a case by case basis.”

The Dolphins organization released a statement on the social media platform X in light of Hill’s arrest and noted that several players on the team passed by the incident as it was unfolding and stopped to provide support to the 30-year-old.

The South Florida Police Benevolent Association also released a statement that blamed Hill for the physical confrontation, however. The statement reads that Hill was “uncooperative” and “initiated” the incident with law enforcement.

Despite the fact that Hill was detained just hours before the start of Miami’s season opener, he suited up against the Jaguars and starred in the Dolphins’ come-from-behind victory. He finished with the most receiving yards of any player on the team by a significant margin with 130 and also racked up one receiving touchdown on seven total receptions.

The incident that Hill was involved in earlier that day seemingly didn’t affect his play, and he will try to replicate his performance versus the Jaguars during Miami’s next game on its 17-game schedule, which will be against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 12.

Buffalo — a fellow AFC East team — won its first game of the 2024 regular season against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 8 thanks to a commendable showing from signal-caller Josh Allen. Allen threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns without registering a single interception.

Hill and the Dolphins will hope to hand the Bills their first loss of the new season on Thursday and simultaneously improve their record to 2-0. Miami will have a short break after it takes on Buffalo, as the Dolphins won’t take the field again until Sept. 22 when they are scheduled to play the Seattle Seahawks.
