Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell shared that he was also detained in handcuffs on Sunday along with star receiver Tyreek Hill.
Hill reportedly was stopped for reckless driving just outside of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. He was placed in handcuffs.
Campbell got out of his car to try to de-escalate the situation. The veteran lineman was then placed in cuffs for allegedly “disobeying a direct order,” according to the 38-year-old.
Campbell called the situation with Hill unnecessary, arguing that excessive force was used in the incident.
It’s a troubling situation all around, and the Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement Sunday afternoon sharing that an officer involved has been placed on “administrative duties.”
It’s nice to see that Campbell went to support his teammate during the incident, and it’s unfortunate that both he and Hill had to go through such a crazy start to the day before playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Miami got off to a slow start as a team on Sunday, but came back to beat the Jaguars on a last-second field goal from Jason Sanders. The 20-17 win puts the Dolphins at 1-0 on the season, a big start since two other teams in the AFC East (the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots) also won on Sunday.
Hill ended up having a solid game for Miami despite the incident before kickoff.
He finished with seven receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown, taking a deep pass from Tua Tagovailoa to the house to get the Dolphins back into the game on Sunday.
After the score, Hill celebrated by having teammate Jaylen Waddle pretend to put him in handcuffs.
The star receiver didn’t seem to be rattled by the incident with police once the game started, and the Dolphins are certainly grateful that he was able to play and showcase his signature speed on the field on Sunday.
Campbell and the Dolphins defense really turned things around in the second half of Sunday’s game, holding Jacksonville scoreless after giving up 17 first-half points.
While Miami had a hectic start to Week 1, it has to be happy that it came out of Sunday’s game with a win.
