Everything we know after Tyreek Hill was handcuffed and detained by police ahead of Miami Dolphins season opener

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was reportedly detained outside of Hard Rock Stadium for a driving violation on Sunday but will still suit up against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, Hill was cited for reckless driving — although there has been conflicting info on whether or not Hill was actually given a citation.

“I’m told by sources Tyreek Hill was cited for reckless driving as a result of his incident outside the stadium with police,” Darlington wrote on X. “After he was pulled over, he got into a verbal altercation with police. The officer chose to place Hill in handcuffs. He was cited and released after the situation was deescalated.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Hill was detained by police, but that the star receiver’s agent Drew Rosenhaus clarified that he will play on Sunday.

The Dolphins released a statement about the matter, explaining that multiple teammates saw the incident and offered to support the Pro Bowl receiver. They also shared that all the players that stopped by the incident, including Hill, will be able to play on Sunday.

“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the Dolphins confirmed in a statement. “He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

It’s a huge sigh of relief for Dolphins fans, as Hill missing Week 1 would have put a major dent in the Dolphins’ chances to beat Jacksonville.

However, it is concerning that Hill, who has had troubles with the law in the past, was in this situation ahead of Sunday’s game.

The way the detainment was handled has raised some eyebrows. According to Rosenhaus, the incident involving Hill was “completely unnecessary.”

Hopefully, there won’t be any additional discipline from the league or law enforcement handed down to the star receiver that could impact his ability to play for Miami this season.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared some more details on the matter and actually reported that Hill was released without being given a citation.

“My understanding is, after talking with his agent Drew Rosenhaus and several other sources, Tyreek Hill was detained by police on his way into the stadium for what is being called a traffic violation,” he said. “From my understanding, and based on the footage I’ve seen, Tyreek Hill was slammed to the ground, handcuffed for five minutes.

“There was a conversation with Hill, his agent Drew Rosenhaus and police. Calais Campbell also got involved, trying to help and defuse the situation. In the end, no violation was given. There was no citation. … Tyreek Hill was eventually released.”

Hill has had a ton of success playing with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He put up 1,710 receiving yards in the 2022 season and an NFL-best 1,799 receiving yards last season. Hill also led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in the 2023 campaign with 13.

In each of the last two seasons, Hill has finished in the top five in voting for the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award. In addition to that, he’s made the Pro Bowl in each of his eight seasons in the NFL, recording over 1,000 receiving yards in all but two of those seasons.

With the Dolphins looking to make the playoffs for a third straight season in the 2024 campaign, Hill is going to play a major role in the offense alongside receiver Jaylen Waddle.

The Dolphins and Jaguars are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. EST from Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.
