One of the newest Miami Dolphins is showing off his preparation for the upcoming NFL season, as video footage shows Jonnu Smith going through a nifty workout that should make fans further excited about his potential in the team’s offense.
The tight end signed with the Dolphins earlier this month on a two-year contract worth $10 million. He played last season for the Atlanta Falcons, who chose to release him even after he posted NFL career-highs with 50 receptions and 582 receiving yards.
For his career, which began with the Tennessee Titans and has also included time with the New England Patriots, he has 219 receptions for 2,423 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. The hope seems to be that he will be a solid receiving threat from the tight end position for the Dolphins, who have relied heavily on wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to move the ball through the air. Durham Smythe led Miami’s tight ends with just 366 receiving yards last season.
Despite facing some salary cap concerns entering the offseason, the Dolphins have been very active adding players to their roster. On the offensive side of the ball alone, they are also bringing in tight end Jody Fortson and center Aaron Brewer and were able to re-sign wide receivers Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft as well as linemen Robert Jones and Isaiah Wynn.
They also may not be done upgrading their receiving corps as they have been linked to wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Michael Thomas, two veterans who were once among the best pass-catchers in the league but are now beyond their prime years.
Head coach Mike McDaniel recently revealed the Dolphins made an offer to Beckham, but reports suggest money is likely to be a major factor for the 31-year-old who played last season for the Baltimore Ravens.
In addition, the veteran might bring with him some baggage the Dolphins may want to avoid. He recently posted some questionable photos of himself and his mother to social media, one example of him making headlines for off-the-field reasons.
That certainly is very far from the latest post of Smith showing off some hard work as he gets his game ready for the upcoming campaign.
