Jevon Holland says he got about 180 text messages and won 98-inch TV for TD vs. Jets

Miami Dolphins safety Jevon Holland registered an interception with mere seconds remaining in the first half of the team’s matchup against the New York Jets on Nov. 24 and proceeded to score a 99-yard touchdown.

The Dolphins beat the Jets by 21 points to pick up their second win in a row and improve their record to 8-3 on the season.

For his incredible touchdown against New York, Holland earned a 98-inch television along with a spokesperson gig with TCL, an electronics company.

The safety revealed how his agents reached out to him about the free television.

“I didn’t find out until after the game,” Holland said. “But my agents reached out to me, and they basically told me that the TCL wanted to give me a 98-inch TV. Now, of course there were details that I didn’t know at the time. But through further knowledge, they told me that they had this unlimited game day upgrade thing going on, and they’ve been doing it all season. Nobody has basically hit it on the nose yet, and I was the first one. It happened to be 98 yards or more touchdown, and I happen to have a 99-yard return. And so they gave out like a million dollars worth of 98-inch TVs, which happened to be like $12,000 or something crazy like that. I had no idea. I had no idea. But yeah, it was cool. I was excited. People were hitting me up on Instagram and Twitter saying, ‘Thank you so much’ and ‘I joined just because and I happened to win a TV,’ so it was awesome.

Holland then said that folks were flooding his phone with text messages after his 99-yard touchdown.

“I had 180 text messages after the game,” he said. “My phone was blowing up, family, friends, teachers that I had over the years and classmates and other pros. Joe Mixon hit me up and Vita Vea, so it was a whole bunch of people and a whole bunch of love that was shown. So, I’m very appreciative to all of them for showing the love.”

The Dolphins drafted Holland with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after his stint playing college football at the University of Oregon.

Holland has enjoyed a productive 2023 season — his third season in the NFL — with the Dolphins so far. Across 10 appearances (all starts), he has accumulated 70 combined tackles, 21 assists on tackles, 49 solo tackles and three tackles for loss. Plus, he has forced three fumbles, defended four passes and come up with one interception.

While Holland has served as an effective and valuable defensive presence for Miami, the Dolphins’ defense hasn’t been great this season from a collective standpoint. Miami has allowed 22.8 points per game so far this season.

Miami’s defense was particularly lackluster in one of the team’s three losses this season, as it gave up 31 points against the Philadelphia Eagles back on Oct. 22. Granted, the Eagles have arguably been the best team in the NFL this season, as evidenced by their 10-1 record.

But on the flip side, in the Dolphins’ most recent win over the Jets, they held New York to just 13 points.

Hopefully, Holland and the Dolphins’ defense will be able to carry over their performances against the Jets into their next matchup against the Washington Commanders on Dec. 3. The Commanders aren’t exactly one of the NFL’s most dynamic offensive teams, as they average just 20.5 points per game.
