Former Dolphins defender asked Peyton Manning to tell NFL to lower his fine after breaking his jaw

During a game between the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts way back in 2001, NFL legend Peyton Manning suffered a broken jaw from a hit that Miami’s Lorenzo Bromell delivered.

The play can be seen here around the 1:50 mark.

Bromell was fined $15,500 for the play. According to Manning, the former Dolphins defender tried to get the Hall of Famer to talk to the NFL about the fine in an attempt to get it reduced.

It sounds like the attempt was unsuccessful.

Bromell spoke about the hit years ago.

“There was no way I could avoid it,” Bromell said in 2001. “I didn’t intentionally try to hit him or hurt him. This was a bad situation. There was nothing I could do about it. I was just playing football hard, the way I’m supposed to.”

The 47-year-old ended up spending four seasons with the Dolphins. He helped the team reach the playoffs in all of his years with the organization.

The former fourth-round pick had some solid seasons at the NFL level. In 53 regular season games with the Dolphins, he totaled 21.5 sacks, 92 combined tackles and 14 tackles for loss.

Bromell ended up playing seven NFL seasons. Manning, of course, had a long and legendary career in which he won two Super Bowls and five MVP awards.

These days, both Manning and Bromell are retired. Unbelievably, the Dolphins are actually still looking for their first playoff win since the Bromell era. He helped the team capture a playoff victory in the 2000 campaign, which was the last time the organization enjoyed a win in the postseason.

That win came against Manning’s Colts.

In the 2023 season, the Dolphins are looking to turn a new page. The team made the playoffs in the 2022 campaign but lost its only postseason game in heartbreaking fashion to the Buffalo Bills.

The organization is in good shape these days and seems to be trending in the right direction. All things considered, it’s been a solid offseason so far from a roster and staffing standpoint, so the Dolphins will look to establish themselves as Super Bowl contenders when the upcoming season begins in the fall.
