Chase Edmonds says last season was worst of his career, explains he got into ‘mental funk’ with Dolphins

The 2022 NFL season was a tough one for running back Chase Edmonds, which is a truth that Miami Dolphins fans know well.

The 26-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins before the 2022 campaign started, but he only ended up appearing in eight games for the team. The Dolphins traded him away to the Denver Broncos during the middle of the season, ending his stint with the team.

He’s now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he recently spoke about how the 2022 campaign was his “worst season ever.”

“You’re like, ‘Okay, things are finally turning around for yourself,'” Edmonds said, referencing the time in which he signed his deal with the Dolphins. “‘Things are finally up and up.’ And you know, last season was, just straight up, my worst season ever in all my years of football. Performance-wise, it was just not up to my standard at all. It’s very humbling.”

Edmonds spoke about how he was never able to get comfortable in Miami’s offense. He explained that he fell into a “mental funk” that caused him to develop some drop issues.

“That was the craziest thing,” he said. “I remember last season, they moved me around so much in terms of training camp, almost like in the slot. I got a mental funk where I let one ball turn into a drop, and two drops turn into three. Prior to that, I had one drop my entire career.

“Obviously, that’s something I was going to address in the offseason and just continue to work.”

In his eight games with the Dolphins, Edmonds had 42 carries for just 120 yards, giving him 2.9 yards per attempt. Through the air, he caught 10 passes for 96 yards.

To his credit, he had two rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. However, he also dropped four passes, including a crucial one that might have changed the trajectory of Miami’s season.

The former fourth-round pick will look to bounce back during his stint with the Bucs, who are entering a brand-new era without Tom Brady.

Edmonds has had some nice seasons throughout his career, with arguably his best campaign coming in 2021. During that season, he rushed for 592 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. He also had 311 receiving yards.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, are moving forward with a running back room that looks a lot like it did last season. Edmonds obviously won’t be in the mix, but Miami will roll with players like Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson and Myles Gaskin.

The organization is looking to return to the playoffs for a second straight season, and this time, it’ll look to win a postseason game for the first time since 2000. Time will tell if that’s in the cards.
