Report: Miami Dolphins signing Mike White to multiyear deal worth up to $16M

The Miami Dolphins are adding some help at the quarterback position.

According to a report, Mike White is headed to South Florida on a two-year deal worth up to $16 million.

With Tua Tagovailoa’s health being perhaps the biggest storyline out there for the Dolphins heading into the 2023 season, the team is adding some insurance behind him.

White has starting experience at the NFL level, as he made seven starts (and eight total appearances) over the past two seasons. The Dolphins are certainly hoping he won’t have to start many games for them, but it’s entirely possible that he will.

For his career, he has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 2,145 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The fact that White’s deal is two years long is notable because as things stand now, Tagovailoa is under club control for two years as well. No one knows for sure what Tagovailoa’s future holds in Miami, but it seems like the team has found a solid quarterback to back him up for the next couple of seasons.

Earlier this month, White expressed interest in joining the Dolphins, and he’s now getting his wish. The 27-year-old could turn into something of a project for the Dolphins, as he was drafted just a few years back in 2018 and may still have some untapped potential.

According to a report, the Dolphins spoke to some other quarterbacks before ultimately settling on White.

“The Dolphins spoke to quarterbacks with more starting experience, but weren’t inclined to play 1A money for a QB, according to an agent who spoke with them,” wrote Barry Jackson and Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald. “‘They just don’t want to allocate a lot to the position,’ the agent said.”

The Dolphins learned in the 2022 season how important quarterback depth is. With Tagovailoa in and out of action throughout the season, the team had to rely on Teddy Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson more often than expected.

White should help the team gain some stability at the position. He’s also familiar with the AFC East and may be able to help the Dolphins game plan for the New York Jets since he just spent multiple seasons with them.

It’s an important signing for the Dolphins, who are wasting no time this offseason when it comes to roster improvements.
