Dan Orlovsky vouches for Carson Wentz to join Miami Dolphins to back up Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins have a bit of uncertainty at the quarterback position, and that may make the team an attractive potential destination for Carson Wentz.

Dan Orlovsky recently made a case for why Miami could be good for Wentz. The indication is surely that Wentz could have a chance to start at some point given the uncertainty surrounding Tua Tagovailoa.

“I think one of two options,” said Orlovsky in regards to what’s next for Wentz. “Find a team that has a starter that’s a little bit in question, the Miami Dolphins. And maybe go say, ‘I’m going to be the backup,’ and we know that Tua has a little bit of history with injury.”

It is definitely not a bad business plan for Wentz. In Tagovailoa’s three seasons in the NFL so far, he has yet to play in more than 13 games in a single season. If Wentz did end up signing with the Dolphins, he’d have to feel pretty good about the chances of his number getting called at some point.

Beyond that, Tagovailoa’s own future with the Dolphins does not seem ironclad. On Tuesday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel offered an update on Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option, saying that the team has yet to make a decision on the matter.

McDaniel also asserted that the team will likely look for another quarterback to add to the roster to compete with Skylar Thompson for the backup spot. That seems to indicate that the Dolphins will definitely be scouring the league for a solid option at backup quarterback.

Though Wentz had an incredible start to his NFL career after being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, injuries have really impacted his trajectory. Last season, he played in just eight games (starting seven) and finished with 1,755 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

With that in mind, he did play quite well in the 2021 campaign. As a member of the Indianapolis Colts, Wentz started 17 games and finished with 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. At 30 years old, he figures to have a lot left in the tank as well.

So, as the 2023 NFL offseason gets underway, it appears there is a compelling case as to why Wentz should be a name that Dolphins fans keep an eye on.
