Vic Fangio reveals he’s come up with a new coverage that he’s ‘anxious’ to try out for Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio revealed that he has a new coverage that he’s looking forward to trying out this season.

Fangio, who spent some time with the Philadelphia Eagles helping their staff ahead of last season’s Super Bowl, took the majority of the 2022 season away from the game of football.

“I spent it well,” Fangio said of his time away from coaching. “I treated it like a college professor on a sabbatical. I had a full video setup of everything in the league just as if I was a coach in somebody’s office and studied a lot of different situations and facets of the game. And it was very, very good for me and already come up with a new coverage or two that I’m anxious to try out.”

The Dolphins certainly could use Fangio’s advanced defensive mind to help them in the 2023 campaign after they ranked 27th in the NFL in opponent passing yards last season.

Miami’s defense wasn’t terrible overall, but it gave up a ton of points, ranking 24th in the league in points against.

Fangio comes to Miami with loads of experience as an NFL defensive coordinator. He spent time with the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers as a defensive coordinator from the 1995 season through the 2018 campaign.

He was then hired by the Denver Broncos as their head coach ahead of the 2019 regular season. Fangio led Denver for three seasons, posting a 19-30 record.

The Broncos did not make the playoffs with him as the head coach, but plenty of defensive players shined under him. Justin Simmons became a standout safety under Fangio while Bradley Chubb, who is now on the Dolphins, made it to the Pro Bowl in the 2020 season.

Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins are hoping that Fangio will help turn them into one of the best defenses in the NFL as they look to make a playoff run in the 2023 season.

Fangio should have fun designing coverages for the Dolphins’ talented secondary that features Jevon Holland and Xavien Howard. With McDaniel running the offense and Fangio running the defense, the Dolphins seem to have one of the better coaching staffs in the NFL.
