Dan Marino admits he considered leaving Miami Dolphins to chase Super Bowl ring late in career

Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino spent his entire NFL career with the Miami Dolphins, and he accomplished a long list of impressive feats during his time with the organization.

However, one box that he was never able to check was winning a Super Bowl title. Marino played 17 NFL seasons, and while he led the Dolphins to the playoffs many times and reached the Super Bowl once, he was never able to win it all.

The former Dolphins star recently revealed that he did consider leaving Miami to chase a title, but in the end, it “just didn’t feel right” for him.

“Yes, I definitely thought about it to be honest with you,” Marino said. “I played 17 years for the Dolphins, and they were kind of going in a new direction and a new coach, and I had offers to go play other places and really thought about it, and maybe had a chance to win a championship like Matthew [Stafford] has done.”

It doesn’t seem like Marino regrets his decision to stay with the Dolphins.

“It just didn’t feel right,” he said regarding the idea of leaving. “I just decided I’ll just be a Dolphin for life, and it’s worked out great.”

While Marino didn’t win a Super Bowl, he did accomplish plenty. During his time with the Dolphins, he racked up nine Pro Bowl selections, three All-Pro selections, one MVP award and several other achievements.

His MVP season came in the 1984 campaign, which was also the season in which he reached his lone Super Bowl. That season, he completed 64.2 percent of his passes for a whopping 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns.

For his career, he completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 61,361 yards and 420 touchdowns. As a starter, he posted a career record of 147-93.

While Dolphins fans certainly would have been thrilled to witness a Super Bowl title during the Marino era, many folks in Miami surely have fond memories of his career anyway.

Without a doubt, Marino and plenty of other Dolphins fans are hoping that the organization will soon win its first title since the 1973 season. The 2022 Dolphins would love nothing more than to accomplish the ultimate goal of winning it all.
