Report: Mike Gesicki and Dolphins not expected to reach agreement on extension before deadline

Earlier this offseason, the Miami Dolphins used the franchise tag to make sure that they would be able to keep tight end Mike Gesicki on the roster for the 2022 NFL season.

Despite the use of the franchise tag, the two sides still have until Friday to come to an agreement on a contract extension. According to a Thursday report, however, such an agreement is not expected.

Gesicki is a solid tight end in the NFL, but there does seem to be a general consensus that his style of play comes with certain strengths and weaknesses. Given that fact, it isn’t shocking that Miami’s front office wants to see another season from Gesicki before deciding whether or not it will commit to him in the long term.

Last season, Gesicki played in 17 games for the Dolphins and finished with 73 catches for 780 yards and two touchdowns. Those are strong numbers for a tight end, but his weakness as a blocker also has to be considered.

Hopefully, he’ll play well enough in the upcoming season to convince the Dolphins that he deserves to be with the organization for a long time.
