Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier revealed that the team is not pursuing veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu.
While Dolphins fans would certainly love a pairing of Jevon Holland and Mathieu, it appears that won’t be happening.
Mathieu, who spent the last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, is one of the best safeties in the NFL. With the Dolphins recently making a major move for Tyreek Hill, they may not be able to make a competitive offer to Mathieu.
The Louisiana State University product was a third-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals back in the 2013 NFL Draft and has turned himself into one of the best defensive playmakers in the league.
In his nine-year career, Mathieu has amassed 610 combined tackles, 76 passes defended and 26 interceptions. Last season, he recorded 76 combined tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries in 16 games for the Chiefs.
The three-time Pro Bowler would undoubtedly be a great addition to Miami’s secondary.
However, with Xavien Howard, Byron Jones and Holland already in place for the Dolphins in the secondary, the team doesn’t have as big of a need for Mathieu.
Miami’s front office is giving head coach Mike McDaniel a very solid squad to work with during the 2022 season. Besides Hill, the Dolphins have also acquired Terron Armstead and Cedrick Wilson Jr. among others this offseason.
Mathieu has shown that he can still be an impact player in this league. It will certainly be interesting to see where he ends up, but it looks like Miami is out of the picture.
