Report: Miami Dolphins ‘monitoring’ versatile offensive lineman

The Miami Dolphins reportedly are “monitoring” veteran offensive lineman Cornelius Lucas as a potential addition in free agency.

“He’s one name on Miami’s radar that the Dolphins are monitoring, among others,” the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson wrote regarding Lucas.

The Dolphins are looking to improve their protection of Tua Tagovailoa in the 2022 season, as some of their young offensive linemen have failed to pan out the way they had hoped.

The Dolphins currently have Jesse Davis and Liam Eichenberg as their starting offensive tackles, but it’s hard to envision the team deploying them as starters once again after their notable struggles last season.

Miami’s offensive line allowed 40 sacks in the 2021 season, but Lucas could help bring some stability to the unit.

Over the last three seasons, Lucas has appeared in a total of 45 games, and he has made 23 starts over that stretch. While Lucas isn’t the biggest name remaining on the market, the Dolphins would surely benefit from having another option at tackle heading into the 2022 season.

Miami went 9-8 in the 2021 campaign, but it failed to make the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. The Dolphins also had a winning record in the 2020 campaign, but they fell just short of the postseason.

So far this offseason, the Dolphins have made many moves in hopes of improving their offense as a whole. The team has signed Chase Edmonds, Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Connor Williams among others.

It will be interesting to see what additions the Dolphins make to the offensive line ahead of the 2022 season.
