Miami Dolphins reveal intriguing backup plan if they can’t land Brian Daboll

If the Miami Dolphins don’t hire Brian Daboll as their new head coach, a new report indicates that Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is their next target.

SI.com’s Albert Breer looked at the Dolphins’ coaching search and noted that the New York Giants are also in competition to hire Daboll.

“If the Giants try to close on Daboll?” wrote Breer. “Then, Miami could turn to its ex-defensive coordinator (and current Cardinals DC) Vance Joseph, another candidate who’s positioned well with Miami wrapping up its initial set of head coaching interviews.”

Daboll is presently the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, who were eliminated in Sunday night’s thrilling overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Any potential hiring of Daboll is now possible due to the Bills’ postseason elimination, with one report stating that he interviewed “well” with the Dolphins.

If the Giants end up hiring the 46-year-old Daboll, the Dolphins will apparently then focus on the 49-year-old Joseph, who has past NFL head coaching experience.

Joseph was in charge of the Denver Broncos in 2017 and 2018, with the team struggling through a pair of difficult seasons. Joseph was let go after compiling an 11-21 record during his short tenure with the franchise.

That dismissal led to Joseph being hired by the Cardinals, where he’s spent the past three seasons. The Cardinals began the 2021-22 campaign by winning their first seven games and had a 10-2 record before ultimately losing a playoff game to the Los Angeles Rams.

Daboll may have the edge due to his past connections with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. However, it’s clear that the Dolphins have a clear plan in place to name their next head coach.
