The Miami Dolphins shocked many on Monday, as they fired head coach Brian Flores after three seasons with the team.
Flores accumulated a 24-25 record during his time in Miami. Given his reputation around the league and the fact that so many people were surprised at the move, it seems like Flores won’t be out of a job for too long.
The Athletic’s Adam Jahns and Kevin Fishbain recently compiled a list of possible candidates for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching vacancy. Flores was listed as one of those candidates.
“The biggest surprise firing came in Miami, when the Dolphins parted ways with Flores after three seasons,” wrote Jahns and Fishbain. “The former [New England] Patriots linebackers and safeties coach had been the Dolphins’ head coach for three seasons, compiling a record of 24-25, including 19-14 in the past two seasons. The Dolphins won seven in a row in 2021 after a 1-7 start, then beat the Patriots 33-24 in Week 18 but missed the postseason. Flores has the experience of being with a winner, having spent more than a decade with the Patriots. He was a part of four Super Bowl winners and spent time on the personnel side as a scout.”
It will be interesting to see where Flores ends up. Teams like the Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos are all currently looking for new head coaches. It would not be surprising to see Flores land with any of those teams.
After going 5-11 in his first season with the Dolphins, which was a year that had much lower expectations, Flores went 19-14 during the past two seasons. He was very close to leading Miami to the playoffs both times, but the team fell just short in both seasons.
Time will tell who ends up replacing Flores in Miami.
