Report: Tua Tagovailoa was not going to be traded even if Miami Dolphins had acquired Deshaun Watson

The Miami Dolphins were one of the teams involved in trade rumors surrounding Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson at the trade deadline.

Amid those rumors, there was a lot of speculation about Tua Tagovailoa’s time with the Dolphins potentially coming to an end. However, according to a recent report, the second-year quarterback was actually not going to be traded even if Miami had completed a deal for Watson.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic wrote about some quarterbacks who could potentially be on the move this offseason, and while he listed Tagovailoa’s name, he made sure to mention that the 23-year-old’s stint with the organization wasn’t in danger of coming to an end at this season’s trade deadline.

“Even when the Dolphins were attempting to acquire Watson this season, sources said Tagovailoa was not going to be traded in a subsequent move,” Howe wrote. “His name is only being included here in the event the Dolphins make a splash trade during the offseason for a no-doubt franchise QB. They should in turn be able to trade Tagovailoa for a second-day pick if he stays healthy and plays well down the stretch.”

It’s certainly an interesting development in the story. Perhaps the Dolphins feel better about Tagovailoa than some fans initially thought.

The former first-round pick is trying very hard to prove his worth this season. Injuries haven’t been kind to him. Over six games, he has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,198 yards and seven touchdowns. He has also thrown five picks.

For the Dolphins to enter next season with Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback, the University of Alabama product might need to impress some folks within the organization before the current campaign ends.
