The Miami Dolphins reportedly signed former sixth-round pick Jake Luton to their practice squad after Jacoby Brissett’s injury last week against the Baltimore Ravens.
Dolphins head coach Brian Flores revealed that both Brissett and Tua Tagovailoa will be available for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, but Luton gives the team some extra insurance.
Luton, who played his college ball at Oregon State, replaced an injured Gardner Minshew as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ starter last season.
He made three starts for the Jaguars, going 0-3, but he threw for 624 yards in those games. Luton completed 54.5 percent of his passes, threw two touchdowns, six interceptions and finished the season with a passer rating of 54.5.
He was benched after those three starts in favor of veteran Mike Glennon.
“The Dolphins have been looking for a developmental quarterback for their practice squad since Reid Sinnett was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia last month after the Dolphins tried to move him from their active roster to the practice squad,” the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson wrote.
Luton will replace Jake Dolegala as the quarterback on Miami’s practice squad. With the lack of durability shown by both Tagovailoa and Brissett this season, there’s a chance that Luton could find himself on the active roster at some point in the 2021 campaign.
The Dolphins are just 3-7 this season, but they have a chance to pick up another win when they take on the Jets in Week 11. New York has struggled this season and is without starting quarterback Zach Wilson.
