Report: Miami Dolphins RB Matt Breida’s Role Expected to Expand in Week 2

Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is looking at ways that he can make running back Matt Breida a more integral part of the team’s offense.

Breida was acquired by the Dolphins from the San Francisco 49ers during April’s NFL draft and is currently in his fourth season.

Exactly what Gailey is considering is unknown, but Breida has produced from the running back position and offers the team a player who can catch the ball.

During his three seasons in San Francisco, Breida rushed for 1,902 yards and scored six touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught 67 passes for 561 yards and scored four touchdowns.

In Sunday’s 21-11 loss to the New England Patriots, the Dolphins had just 278 yards of total offense, with veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing for 191 yards to seven different receivers.

Breida didn’t catch any passes against the Patriots, but finished with 22 yards on five carries, with his longest carry going seven yards.

The use of Breida as a receiver would help smooth the transition of Malcolm Perry, a rookie, and Lynn Bowden Jr., who was acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this month.

Miami will take on the Buffalo Bills in their home-opener on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, with the team hoping to even its mark on the young season. A loss by the Dolphins would already put them two games behind the Patriots and Bills and likely tamp down any discussions of the team’s postseason chances.
