Next month, Fox will air a documentary on Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagolvailoa that will largely look at the final year of his collegiate career at the University of Alabama.
Variety exclusively reported the news and indicated that the documentary, entitled simply “Tua,” will air on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. EST.
“Tua is a beloved young star with an incredible story,” said Charlie Dixon, executive vice president of content at Fox Sports. “We like to say, ‘Fox is Football,’ and since it’s in our DNA, that means providing the deepest insight into the sport both on and off the field. The film’s level of access and pure emotion provides a new level of appreciation for his journey.”
The documentary will include a look at how Tagovailoa made his way to Alabama from Hawaii, though the bulk of the film will focus on his injury-plagued 2019 campaign.
A severe hip injury in November 2019 ended Tagovailoa’s season and potentially put his football career in jeopardy. However, the Dolphins were comfortable enough with his rehabilitation to select him with the fifth overall pick in April’s NFL draft.
“I’m excited about this film for a variety of reasons, but mainly because it represents the deep love and appreciation that I have for my culture, my faith and, more importantly, my family,” said Tagovailoa. “I am extremely proud of this project and the efforts it took to get here. I look forward to sharing it with everyone.”
Besides Tagovailoa, other individuals featured will include Alabama head coach Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lyle Cain, former NFL quarterbacks Steve Young and Trent Dilfer and Tagovailoa’s parents.
One week after the documentary airs, the Dolphins are scheduled to open the season at New England, though it’s uncertain whether or not Tagovailoa will start that contest.
