Chop Robinson plans to wear a Guardian Cap against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday after clearing the NFL’s concussion protocol, giving the Miami Dolphins an encouraging injury update alongside a new decision about his equipment.
The edge rusher’s clearance and plan to begin wearing the cap were reported Thursday. Robinson also discussed a concussion history that extends beyond the injury that kept him out against San Francisco.
Robinson said he had sustained three concussions over the past two seasons with Miami and two during college.

He also made clear that he intends to continue playing.

Robinson missed the 49ers game after sustaining a concussion in practice. His latest update shifts the focus to his planned return against Kansas City and the equipment change he intends to make.
Chop Robinson’s update goes beyond a return to practice
Head coach Jeff Hafley had announced Wednesday that Robinson would practice. Asked during that availability about repeated concussions, Hafley directed the question to the medical staff.
“That’s more for the medical team,” Hafley said.
Thursday’s clearance is a further development beyond that practice announcement. It answers the protocol question that remained as Robinson returned to work, while his comments provide his own perspective on continuing his career.
A Guardian Cap is padding worn over a player’s helmet. The NFL began allowing players to use the caps in regular-season games in 2024.
Dolphins still have questions on the edge
Robinson’s progress comes as Miami monitors another edge defender. During Thursday’s portion of practice open to reporters, Robert Beal Jr. was not seen participating.
That observation does not establish Beal’s availability for Sunday, but it gives Robinson’s clearance added relevance to the personnel picture. Miami is still sorting through its options as Hafley considers adjustments to generate more pressure.
For Robinson, the next football question is how much work he takes on. The clearance report does not specify a snap count or announce how Miami will divide its edge rotation, so his return cannot yet be translated into a particular workload.
What Thursday established is more immediate: Robinson has cleared protocol, has addressed his history publicly and plans to wear different equipment when the Dolphins face the Chiefs.
