Given quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s injury history, the Miami Dolphins know as well as any team in the league how important it is to have capable backups at the position.
The Dolphins added quarterbacks Zach Wilson (via free agency) and Quinn Ewers (via the draft) this offseason. With how much Wilson’s contract is worth ($6 million), it seems safe to say that he’s in line to be the team’s No. 2 quarterback, but it sounds like Ewers just had a strong day at training camp in Miami’s third practice.

Having more than one capable backup would be a good problem to have. Wilson brings some NFL experience to the table after he played in 34 games with the New York Jets and started 33 of them. Although he had his moments with New York, he was never able to find his footing, resulting in a disappointing tenure for a guy who went No. 2 overall in 2021.
Across his Jets stint, Wilson completed 57.0 percent of his passes and threw more interceptions than he did touchdowns, though not by much.
Ewers, for his part, comes to the Dolphins after he did enough in his collegiate career to get himself drafted. In his final collegiate season, he completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 14 games.
But success in college doesn’t always equate to success in the NFL, as evidenced by Wilson’s pro struggles following a dominant final season at the collegiate level. With that being the case, it’s a good sign that Ewers is showing some promising signs early on in training camp, and hopefully, that carries on as the summer continues.
Of course, the ultimate hope for the Dolphins is that Tagovailoa will be able to stay on the field for the entire 2025 season, which would allow the team to stay away from its backups throughout the campaign. But if history is any indication, it’s unfortunately possible that the team will indeed need to rely on its quarterback depth chart at some point during the season.
Miami is trying to bounce back in the 2025 campaign after it missed the playoffs last season and finished with a record below .500.
