The Jalen Ramsey era in Miami is over after the Miami Dolphins traded the cornerback along with tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers recently.
It’s also no secret that Vic Fangio no longer serves as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, as he currently works in that same position for the Philadelphia Eagles and helped the team win a Super Bowl recently. Fangio only spent the 2023 season with Miami.
Ramsey’s and Fangio’s tenures with the Dolphins are firmly in the rearview at this juncture, but a recent report has harked back to when they were both with the organization. According to NFL insider Adam Caplan, Ramsey didn’t like how Fangio utilized him on the field back in the 2023 season.
“He didn’t like the way that Vic Fangio was using him two years ago because he moved Ramsey around a lot,” Caplan said. “Ramsey, if he had his druthers, as I understand it — and this happened with the [Los Angeles] Rams too because he played some nickel with the Rams — he’d like to be an outside corner. He’s got ideal length for that position.”
Ramsey’s first season in a Dolphins uniform came in the 2023 campaign, but an injury limited him to just 10 games played. He was sidelined for the opening seven games of the campaign after he underwent offseason meniscus surgery. He suited up in every one of the final 10 contests of the season (plus Miami’s lone playoff game), and impressively, he still earned a Pro Bowl selection.
The veteran racked up three interceptions and five passes defended along with 22 combined tackles, 18 solo tackles and four assisted tackles playing for Fangio’s defensive unit in the 2023 campaign. His individual play didn’t lead to the Dolphins having a strong team defense, however, as Miami allowed 23.0 points per game in the 2023 campaign, which ranked 22nd in the league.
Fangio’s one-season stint in Miami certainly didn’t go too well, but he did a commendable job leading the Eagles’ defensive unit last season. Philadelphia had one of the top defenses in all of football with Fangio in the fold and on the coaching staff, as the Eagles allowed just 17.8 points per game. Only the Los Angeles Chargers allowed fewer points on a game-to-game basis.
Ramsey will look to have a similarly successful first season with his new team to what Fangio experienced upon leaving the Dolphins. The Steelers are on the heels of a 10-7 campaign in the 2024 season and hoping that Ramsey will help them get closer to Super Bowl contention.
