Cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith have found themselves in headlines as of late for the Miami Dolphins, although for somewhat different reasons.
Ramsey and the Dolphins are looking to head their separate ways after the star cornerback spent just two seasons in Miami. There seems to be a real possibility that Ramsey will get moved via trade in the near future.
As for Smith, he is looking for a restructured deal from the Dolphins after he torched opposing defenses across 17 appearances and six starts in the 2024 season. He scored the most touchdowns in a single season by a Dolphins tight end in franchise history.
With the tough situations that the Dolphins find themselves in with Ramsey and Smith, fans shouldn’t be shocked to find out that neither player will reportedly be at the team’s mandatory minicamp this week.
At least one ESPN NFL analyst thinks that if the Dolphins opt to move Ramsey, it could come at a great detriment to the team’s secondary. Ben Solak said not all that long ago that the Dolphins’ secondary could be the “worst position group” in the entire league if Ramsey changes teams.
Ramsey started 17 games with the Dolphins in the 2024 season and racked up 60 combined tackles, 21 assisted tackles, 39 solo tackles, six tackles for loss and four quarterback hits. In addition, he came up with a pair of interceptions in his second season in a Dolphins uniform.
While Ramsey appears to be on his way out of Miami, Smith and the Dolphins appear to be mutually interested in continuing their partnership for the long haul.
After all, Smith received far more targets in his maiden season in Miami than he did in any other campaign of his NFL career so far. He paid that off by finishing with the most receiving yards of any tight end in Dolphins history in the 2024 campaign.
Hopefully, the Dolphins can get the Ramsey and Smith situations squared away in the near future so they can turn their focus to the 2025 season.
