Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith is in the market for a new contract this offseason, and it’s possible that it could keep him away from the team’s mandatory minicamp.
According to Smith’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, the star tight end’s situation is “fluid.” Rosenhaus did say that he has been in discussions with the Dolphins, which could be a positive sign for the two sides reaching a resolution.
It was recently reported that Smith’s situation is “all about the money,” but that both he and the Dolphins want to remain together.
Smith was a huge piece of the Dolphins’ offense in the 2024 season, catching 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. He tied his career-high for receiving touchdowns in a single season while setting career-highs in receptions and receiving yards.
Prior to the 2024 season, Smith only had one season in his career where he caught 50 or more passes.
Smith signed a two-year deal worth a little over $8 million with the Dolphins prior to the 2024 season, but it appears that he wants to lock in some more long-term money since the 2025 campaign is the final season of his current deal.
The Dolphins have a bunch of dynamic playmakers on offense around Tua Tagovailoa, including Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and De’Von Achane. However, adding Smith into the mix makes Miami an even tougher team to stop on offense.
The Dolphins are coming off a down 2024 season, as they failed to make the playoffs for the first time under head coach Mike McDaniel. Miami finished with an 8-9 record, and it really struggled in the six games that Tagovailoa missed, going just 2-4.
Still, Smith put up some impressive numbers on offense, and he showed that he can be an impact player even with Hill and Waddle struggling to meet their statistics from previous seasons.
Hopefully, the Dolphins will be able to come to terms on a resolution with Smith sooner rather than later, as they certainly want him to participate in the mandatory parts of their offseason program.
