Linebacker Bradley Chubb has been plagued by injuries for a while now. He tore his ACL, meniscus and patellar tendon in his right knee back in December of 2023 and has yet to play for the Miami Dolphins since then.
Chubb sat out the entirety of the 2024 campaign, and Miami ended up with a mediocre 8-9 record on the season sans one of its better defensive players.
According to Barry Jackson, the Dolphins have been in touch with Chubb with the start of free agency nearing.
“The Dolphins have had conversations with outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, according to a league source, but his future remained undetermined as of mid-afternoon Tuesday,” Jackson wrote.
Even with his poor injury luck lately, the Dolphins allegedly remain interested in retaining Chubb, though it would have to be “on their terms.”
“The Dolphins are believed to have interest in keeping Chubb on their terms, but Chubb has a major say in that decision,” Jackson wrote. “Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has said he’s excited about using Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson together at times.”
Chubb has played for just two NFL teams since being drafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, as he started out his pro career with the Denver Broncos.
As recently as the 2023 season, Chubb served as a highly productive player for the Dolphins. He appeared in 16 games that campaign and showed off his penchant for forcing fumbles in his first full season with the team, as he led the league with a whopping six forced fumbles. Chubb also chipped in 11 sacks, 73 combined tackles, 45 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits.
It’s possible the notion that Miami is still interested in keeping Chubb around despite the fact that he’s been down for the count for a bit has to do with seeing how Chubb would fare under the team’s new defensive coordinator. Weaver now holds the position, and the Dolphins had an auspicious 2024 campaign with him leading the way on that side of the ball.
When Chubb put up those big numbers in the 2023 season, Vic Fangio was the team’s defensive coordinator, and Fangio seemingly wasn’t beloved among players on the defensive unit during his time in Miami, to put it mildly.
Fans should try to keep tabs on Chubb’s contract situation with the Dolphins in the coming days. Maybe his contract will get restructured, and it’s also within the realm of possibility that Miami releases him, though the franchise would probably be wise to do the former.
