Report: Miami Dolphins take step toward poaching key Dallas Cowboys coach

The Miami Dolphins decided to part ways with wide receivers coach Wes Welker earlier this month.

Welker spent three seasons in that role for the Dolphins, and under his tutelage, receivers such as Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle enjoyed some of the more productive seasons of their pro careers so far. Unfortunately, Miami had a disappointing 2024 season, leading to some changes.

Now, the Dolphins are looking to fill that coaching hole, and a report from ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques indicates that the team is taking steps toward finding Welker’s replacement. Miami has reportedly interviewed Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Robert Prince for the position.

Welker suited up for the Dolphins during his playing days well before he joined head coach Mike McDaniel’s staff in Miami. He played in 46 games across three seasons with the squad in the 2000s. He had a couple of solid seasons with the franchise and showed that he belonged in the NFL.

His swan song as a member of the Dolphins came in the 2006 campaign. After that, he landed with the New England Patriots via trade, and he became a star with them. Years later, he retired from the NFL after appearing in eight games with the St. Louis Rams in the 2015 season.

Prince’s experience as a wide receivers coach dates back many years. He has held that role with multiple organizations.

He has been employed by the Cowboys since 2022, and in each of his first two years as a member of the team’s coaching staff, Dallas qualified for the playoffs on the back of elite production from its offense.

But for the first time in some time, the Cowboys offense didn’t operate like a well-oiled machine in the 2024 season. Dallas scored only 350 points across 17 games played. The last time the Cowboys scored less than 350 points in a single campaign came all the way back in the 2018 season when the team finished with 339 across a 16-game schedule.

To boot, the Cowboys averaged just 20.6 points per game this season, putting 20 NFL teams ahead of them.

The Dolphins are looking to find some answers themselves after a frustrating season. Perhaps someone like Prince is exactly what they need to turn a corner.
