Report: Miami Dolphins expected to pursue quarterback Daniel Jones

The Miami Dolphins reportedly are among the teams that are expected to pursue veteran quarterback Daniel Jones once he clears waivers.

Jones, who was benched for Tommy DeVito and eventually released by the New York Giants, was a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

There are a lot of teams reportedly interested in Jones, including the Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers. Jones struggled in the 2024 season, leading the Giants to a 2-8 start, but he did win a playoff game for the franchise in the 2022 season.

It makes a lot of sense that the Dolphins would be interested in a quarterback like Jones since he has a ton of starting experience in the NFL. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has already missed four games this season with a concussion, and the lefty has been injury prone since the Dolphins drafted him in the 2020 NFL draft.

If Tagovailoa did go down again in the 2024 season, having an established quarterback like Jones could potentially give Miami a better chance to win. The Dolphins have already used Skylar Thompson, Tyler Huntley and Tim Boyle in relief of Tagovailoa this season, and none of those quarterbacks had much success under center.

This season, Jones has thrown for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 63.3 percent of his passes. He’s thrown for 70 scores and 47 interceptions in his NFL career (70 games).

Jones is also a solid runner, racking up 265 yards and two scores on the ground this season. He has run for 2,179 yards and 15 touchdowns in his NFL career.

While the Dolphins may have to win a bidding war for Jones, it’s also possible that the veteran quarterback may want to join a team that is closer to making the playoffs like Baltimore or Minnesota.

Right now, Miami is 4-6 on the season and on the outside of the playoff picture in the AFC. However, it could inch closer to a playoff spot in Week 12 if it can beat the New England Patriots. The Patriots have just three wins on the season.
