Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill appeared to joke that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would possibly injure himself if Miami were to have the signal-caller try a designed run in his first play back with the team.
He made the joke on X. It’s worth noting that some people have interpreted the post in a variety of ways.
While Tagovailoa will have to sit out Miami’s next regular-season game against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 20, he will be eligible to make his return versus the Arizona Cardinals one week later. Tagovailoa suffered a concussion against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 12 and hasn’t played for the Dolphins since then.
The 26-year-old ranks among the top quarterbacks in the NFL when he’s healthy, but he isn’t exactly renowned for his rushing chops. Tagovailoa has never run for more than 128 yards in a single season of his pro tenure, and he totaled just 74 rushing yards in 17 starts with the Dolphins during the 2023 regular season. He also hasn’t had a rushing touchdown since the 2021 season.
Plus, the decision to have Tagovailoa run the ball in his very first play back would be a questionable one considering he suffered a concussion not all that long ago. Tagovailoa has sustained numerous concussions in his NFL career thus far, so the Dolphins should be cautious in making sure he doesn’t suffer the same kind of injury again anytime soon.
Ironically, though, Tyler Huntley — who has started the last two games for Miami at the quarterback spot with Tagovailoa out — has proven during his NFL career that he’s quite the talented rusher. Back in the 2021 regular season, he ran for 294 yards across seven games played (and just four starts).
To boot, Huntley has accumulated 47 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown and four first downs rushing with the Dolphins so far this season.
According to Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, it is expected that Huntley will start his third game in a row when Miami takes on the Colts.
Huntley is on the heels of maybe his best showing of the season against the New England Patriots on Oct. 6, as he helped Miami pick up its second win of the season.
