Jordan Poyer set to resume practice for Dolphins, speaks on going against ‘really tough offense’

Miami Dolphins safety Jordan Poyer revealed on Monday that he sustained a fracture in his thumb during training camp, but that he will return to practice on Tuesday.

This is great news for the Dolphins, as Poyer is expected to have a big role for Miami in the 2024 campaign after safety Brandon Jones left the Dolphins in free agency and signed with the Denver Broncos.

A one-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro, Poyer spent the last seven seasons with the Dolphins’ AFC East rival Buffalo Bills.

Now, Miami is hoping he can anchor its secondary, along with former second-round pick Jevon Holland, in the 2024 season.

Since he is a veteran, Poyer likely won’t need a ton of time to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but it’s a positive sign that he’ll get valuable practice time with the team in the coming weeks.

Last season, Poyer played and started in 16 games for the Bills, recording 100 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and one forced fumble. The former seventh-round pick did not record an interception for the first time since 2016 when he appeared in just six games for the Cleveland Browns.

During his time in Buffalo, Poyer racked up 22 interceptions in 107 total games. He shared some interesting thoughts on the Dolphins’ offense now that he’s with the franchise and not on an opposing team.

Miami has a lot of talent in the secondary, as star cornerback Jalen Ramsey anchors its group of cornerbacks. However, the Dolphins did release veteran Xavien Howard earlier this offseason, meaning they’ll need other players to step up next to Ramsey when the regular season begins.

The Dolphins have already played two preseason games, and they have one more tune-up left on Friday, Aug. 23 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Miami already has two preseason wins under its belt, knocking off the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 and the Washington Commanders in Week 2 of the preseason.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Dolphins have Poyer get any reps in their third preseason game or if they plan to hold the veteran out of game action until the regular season kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 8.
