Tua Tagovailoa falls in middle of pack in latest fantasy football rankings

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is not among the elite quarterbacks for this upcoming season, according to Pro Football Focus’ quarterback tiers for fantasy football.

A whopping 40 signal-callers were included in the rankings, and Tagovailoa was placed at the No. 17 spot.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen sits atop the rankings. He is fresh off a season where he threw for 4,306 yards, 29 touchdowns and 199 first downs.

Allen also helped the Bills clinch the AFC East division, as Buffalo won 11 of its 17 regular-season contests.

After Allen, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, Patrick Mahomes — who won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs last season — Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texans round out the top five.

Tagovailoa’s spot in the rankings may come off as surprising to some, considering the gaudy passing numbers he put up across 17 games (all starts) with the Dolphins during the 2023 regular season.

The 26-year-old led the league with 4,624 total passing yards in his fourth NFL season. He also threw for more than double the amount of touchdowns (29) as he did interceptions (14) for Miami.

Tagovailoa has steadily improved upon his passing yards total with each passing season he has been in the pros. He threw for 1,814 yards as a rookie, 2,653 as a sophomore and 3,548 yards in his third NFL season before staking his claim as one of the league’s best quarterbacks in his fourth year.

Another reason why Tagovailoa being ranked No. 17 among quarterbacks might confuse some NFL fans is that one of his teammates is arguably the best wide receiver in the league in Tyreek Hill. Hill led the league with 1,799 receiving yards in the 2023 regular season and also pulled down a league-high 13 receiving touchdowns in his second season as a member of the Dolphins.

Fantasy football players shouldn’t be shocked if Tagovailoa plays at a level higher than his current ranking suggests he will in the upcoming 2024 campaign.
