Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill thinks that his quarterback Tua Tagovailoa should have already been handed a lucrative deal by now.

An update was recently provided on contract talks between Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, but the two sides have yet to come to an agreement on a deal.

“So they’ve been talking,” said Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “There has been, you know, essentially an offer exchanged but it’s not where it needs to be quite yet. Nothing is imminent as far as I have heard. So this could be a path of least resistance situation because the Dolphins wanted to see Tua prove he can be healthy and produce on the field. He did that…so it should shake out this summer. He is a priority. It just hasn’t gotten to the point where it’s imminent yet, so they’ll hash that out.”

Tagovailoa’s rookie contract — which he signed after the Dolphins drafted him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft — is set to expire after the upcoming 2024 season.

The 26-year-old and Hill formed one of the most productive offensive duos in the NFL during the 2023 regular season. Starting with Tagovailoa, he led the league in total passing yards with 4,624 in his fourth season in the NFL. He averaged 272.0 passing yards per game along with 11.9 yards gained per pass completion and 8.2 adjusted yards gained per pass attempt.

In the process, Tagovailoa threw for the third-most yards in a single season in Dolphins franchise history. The only player to accumulate more passing yards in a single season was Dan Marino (twice), who is widely recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game of football.

As for Hill, he led the NFL in total receiving yards with 1,799, which also marked a franchise record for most receiving yards from a Dolphin ever.

On top of Hill’s historic receiving yards total, he also racked up a league-high 13 receiving touchdowns while averaging 112.4 receiving yards per contest and 7.4 receptions per game.

The 30-year-old finished with 100-plus receiving yards in half of the 16 regular-season games he appeared in during his second season with the Dolphins and ended up with a season-high 215 receiving yards in Miami’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers back on Sept. 10.

Considering Tagovailoa and Hill arguably played as well as anyone at their respective positions during the 2023 regular season, it would seemingly be a practical move if Miami were to ink both players to nice deals in the near future.
