The NFL world is waiting for star receivers like CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson to reset the market price for top pass catchers in the NFL, and it looks like Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill has been seeking to get in on that since the end of the 2023 season.
According to a report, he’s seemingly interested in a new, more lucrative deal than the one he’s currently playing on.
“When the Dolphins traded for receiver Tyreek Hill two years ago, he got a four-year, $120 million extension that was, and is, a three-year, $75 million deal,” NFL insider Mike Florio wrote. “As noted earlier today, the contract hasn’t aged well.
“As it turns out, Hill has been aware of that. And there has been an effort to rectify it.
“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the effort to address Hill’s contract began after the 2023 season ended. That’s when Hill had 1,799 receiving yards, despite a late-season ankle injury that derailed what seemed to be a likely 2,000-yard campaign.
“The effort intensified after [Philadelphia] Eagles receiver A.J. Brown got his latest new contract. Brown got his prior contract when Hill got his current one, and Brown had three years left on his contract. Like Hill does.”
Based on Hill’s current deal, he’s slated to make over $19 million this coming season, over $22 million the following season and $45 million in the 2026 campaign. However, Florio made it clear that the expectation is that the final year of the deal “surely won’t be paid” as planned.
Given those numbers, it’s not a shock that Hill is seeking a new deal. After all, the speculative numbers that have been thrown around in a potential extension from the Minnesota Vikings for Jefferson would dwarf those of Hill’s current contract.
“Let’s work with three years,” Florio wrote of Jefferson in an article earlier this offseason. “And let’s assume that the first three years of the four-year contract will be fully guaranteed. With $19.743 million in hand for 2024, a four-year, $121.743 million deal gets Jefferson to $34 million per year in new money (matching [Nick] Bosa) and $30.43 million in total value at signing.
“That would blow the receiver market out of the water, since the best deals are currently below $24 million per year in total value at signing. But, again, Jefferson transcends all positions but quarterback. [Kwesi] Adofo-Mensah said so. So a true $30 million in actual value at signing seems fair and appropriate.”
It will be really interesting to see what happens for Hill and the Dolphins going forward. Hill is pivotal to the Dolphins offense and is quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s favorite target by a fairly wide margin. For that reason, the franchise is surely motivated to keep him happy.
With that in mind, the Dolphins would surely love to get at least one more season out of the current deal considering it may soon become a substantial discount for a top-flight receiver in the league.
At 30 years old, Hill likely has several more seasons in his prime before he starts seeing a decline due to age. However, given the fact that his dominance is based on his speed and agility as opposed to size and strength, it is possible that the cliff could come sooner or be steeper.
Still, Hill remains firmly at or near the top of the list when fans discuss the best receivers in the game today. Last season, he put up an astounding 1,799 receiving yards on 119 receptions. He also scored 13 times through the air.
